Zora Neale Hurston Critics
In the novel Their Eyes Were Watching God, it shows what people thought African Americans acted like in their lives. The author of the book, Zora Neale Hurston, was greatly criticized for the portrayal of African American life. The book included many stereotypical events that made some writers like Richard Wright, very angry. Richard Wright openly criticized Zora Neale Hurston's book and made people not want to read the book because of how stereotypical the book seemed. The part that made Richard Wright so infuriated was that Zora Neale Hurston was African American, so people who read the book thought the stereotypes were true because it had been written by an African American. Some of the stereotypes were that African American men were abusive of their wives. In the novel, the main character Janie was married to a man named Joe. Joe was nice at first but when Janie started to disobey him, he slapped her across the face.
